The bombing of 14 May 1940 set Rotterdam ablaze. Eighty-six years later, we commemorate the fragility of all that we hold dear. Shostakovich’s trio evokes an image of starving Russia after the Revolution; Messiaen’s quartet, written in a German prisoner-of-war camp, offers a vision of peace beyond the end of time.
Never has this music spoken to us more powerfully than now.
