Icons exhibition
The icons are painted on discarded ammunition boxes that were used during the war in Ukraine. They are a powerful symbol of hope and survival in times of violence.
The icons were made by Olexandr Klymenko and Sofia Atlantova, icon painters from Kyiv. They started their project in 2014 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The artists noticed that the lids of the ammunition boxes were very similar to the wooden planks on which classical icons are painted. This was the inspiration for this special series of artworks. The icons combine modernity and tradition. They tell the story of war and peace, human suffering and hope.
The exhibition has now traveled around the world and can be seen from 2 July in the Laurenskerk in Rotterdam.
The icons are for sale, the proceeds will go to a military hospital in Kyiv.
