At MYL, a song never exists in just one form. On the debut EP ESCAPISM , the same material takes on two guises, both equally true: first raw and recorded live, then completely produced, in a completely different jacket.

For Laurenskerk Invites, Milan van Munster and organist Matthijs van der Wilt are looking for a third together. No studio, no second chance, only trumpet and organ, who find out how they relate to each other in the weeks before the concert. Where the organ carries the songs, where the trumpet takes up space, where both fall silent for a moment. Expect warm, groove-driven jazz that seeks out the space of the church instead of working around it — not a contradiction between club and church, but one sound that nestles somewhere exactly in between.

The result is a performance that cannot be replayed anywhere else, and is heard for the first time that evening. Milan and Matthijs are not alone on stage. A string quartet (Vladena Mineva and Madalena Lopes on violin, TBA on viola and Beatriz Costa on cello) and a rhythm section with Jan Honnef on bass and Jens Colders on SPD help build a sound that uses the full acoustics of the church.

Milan van Munster
Trumpeter and the driving force behind MYL. He started the project because he never really knew it with the question “but what kind of music do you make exactly?” With MYL he blurs the boundaries between genres, not as a statement, but because it is simply the only way his music is right.

Matthijs van der Wilt
Matthijs van der Wilt is a musician, composer and electronic producer with a strong affinity for organ music, electronic soundscapes and film music. From his fascination for timbre and space, he investigates the encounter between the monumental church organ and modern electronics. His music moves between ambient and experimental dance, with influences from both classical and church music, minimal music. Atmosphere, contrast and narrative are central to his work.

De Nieuwe Lichting focuses on supporting Rotterdam makers and scenes, with the aim of reaching their full potential. The power of connection within and between scenes is essential to us and we facilitate this in various ways. Connecting is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s organizing festivals such as Eendracht Festival and Festival Downtown, programming other initiatives, or managing our creative incubator ‘De 3De’, creating connections is our core business.

Hyperorgel

Hyperorgel Rotterdam

In het koor van de Laurenskerk bouwen we een pijporgel van de toekomst, dat digitaal te bespelen is: een ‘hyperorgel’. Zo wordt het orgel toegankelijker voor een brede groep musici.
